14 Cases of Measles Registered in Latvia

Since the outbreak of measles, Latvia has registered a total of 14 cases, according to information compiled by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Latvia has seen a total of 14 measles cases confirmed since the onset of an outbreak, as reported by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). The latest updates reveal that among these cases, seven have been laboratory-confirmed and seven are clinically diagnosed. Notably, the cases involve one adult and mostly students, with one child requiring hospitalization while others are being treated as outpatients. All the affected individuals are epidemiologically linked.

The outbreak primarily affects children from the Rīga Waldorf School, as confirmed by the school's director, who assured that strict adherence to SPKC recommendations is being followed at the institution. The situation is being closely monitored, with SPKC identifying over 1,000 contacts linked to the cases. This growing number underscores concerns about potential further spread of the virus, particularly among unvaccinated individuals.

SPKC has heightened warnings about the risk of ongoing infection in Latvia, especially highlighting vulnerabilities among unvaccinated populations. The authorities have acknowledged difficulties in tracing all contacts, particularly in public settings where interactions can be fleeting. The current risk level remains classified as high as the epidemiological investigation continues to unfold.
