Iguá Sergipe expands social tariff to more than 100,000 families

Iguá Sergipe is set to significantly increase the number of families benefiting from the social water and sewage tariff, following new regulations that allow the inclusion of over 100,000 clients.

Iguá Sergipe, a water and sewage service provider, will greatly expand its social tariff program following the publication of regulatory provisions from the State Regulatory Agency of Public Services of Sergipe (Agrese). This regulation enables Iguá to increase the number of beneficiaries from the current 32,000 to over 100,000, marking a dramatic growth of more than 500% since the company's operations began in the region in May 2025. Initially, only approximately 18,000 users were receiving the social tariff when Iguá commenced its services.

The increase in beneficiaries is attributed to the new guidelines introduced in Portaria nº 15/2026, which simplify the identification process for eligible families. The enhancements are expected to enhance the outreach of the program, making it easier for low-income households to qualify for essential water and sewage services at subsidized rates. The initiative aligns with previous regulations published in September 2025, which already saw an increase of about 88% in beneficiaries due to changes in eligibility criteria.

This expansion of the social tariff program is crucial, especially in the context of ongoing economic challenges that affect low-income families in Sergipe. By leveraging data from the Cadastro Único, the government aims to ensure that those most in need receive necessary support in accessing vital public utilities. Such measures not only improve the quality of life for low-income households but also promote greater equity in access to essential services in the state of Sergipe.
