Hallik: ERSO and the Philharmonic Chamber Choir Need a New Concert Venue

ERSO director Kristjan Hallik calls for a new concert venue due to inadequate space and acoustics in the current Estonia concert hall.

Kristjan Hallik, the director of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO), has raised concerns about the need for a new concert and rehearsal venue for ERSO and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, citing the existing Estonia concert hall's limitations in size and acoustics. He emphasizes that an expansion of the current venue would not resolve the issues, as it primarily serves the opera theater's activities.

On Wednesday, Tallinn's mayor, Peeter Raudsepp, proposed demolishing the Tallinn City Hall and constructing a modern and functional building in its place. His vision includes developing a new home for ERSO in the area of the City Hall, aiming to enhance the musical infrastructure of the city while addressing the requirements of larger musical ensembles.

Hallik's statements highlight the ongoing challenge of providing sufficient acoustic and spatial conditions for orchestral music performances that meet the standards established over the past two centuries. He argues that while the Estonia concert hall was designed with a clear vision, it is ultimately inadequate for the growing demands of symphonic music presentation today.
