Sergipe will have a new natural gas thermoelectric plant

The governor of Sergipe announced the construction of a new natural gas thermoelectric plant in Barra dos Coqueiros following a successful auction by Eneva.

The governor of Sergipe, Fábio Mitidieri, announced the construction of a new natural gas thermoelectric plant in Barra dos Coqueiros following Eneva's victory in a capacity reserve auction conducted by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). This project represents a substantial investment of approximately R$ 7 billion and is expected to create around 3,000 jobs at the peak of its construction phase. Once operational, the new plant will add an estimated 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity to the existing 1.6 GW provided by Porto Sergipe 1, nearly doubling the company's energy output in the state to almost 2.9 GW.

Governor Mitidieri emphasized the significance of the new thermoelectric plant, stating that it will not only be constructed adjacent to the current facility but will also represent a massive development opportunity for Sergipe, enhancing the state’s position in the natural gas market. The government is optimistic that this expansion will contribute to the regional economy significantly, providing numerous job opportunities and boosting energy production.

In addition to the immediate job creation and energy generation benefits, the project aligns with broader national energy policies aimed at increasing the reliance on natural gas as a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels. The construction of this thermoelectric plant is expected to play a key role in meeting the growing energy demands of the state while supporting the transition to more sustainable energy sources in Brazil overall.
