East Africa Leads Hotel Construction, Boosting Regional Economies

East Africa is showing significant growth in hotel construction, led by Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, which are seeing high rates of development compared to other regions.

According to the 2026 W Hospitality Group Hotel Chain Development Pipelines report, East Africa is leading the continent in hotel construction, with Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania marking high construction ratios. Kenya is particularly notable, with plans for 6,190 rooms across 35 properties, of which nearly 80% are under construction. Ethiopia follows closely behind with 5,964 rooms at a 79.9% construction rate, and Tanzania has 4,159 rooms with 77.5% in progress. This trend reflects a strong momentum for hotel development in the region, suggesting a robust growth trajectory for tourism and hospitality.

The growth in East African hotel construction starkly contrasts with North Africa, which maintains a lead in overall pipeline volume but doesn't show the same level of active projects. This active development in East Africa indicates a potential shift in the hospitality landscape of the continent, as these countries prepare to boost their tourism industries. Notably, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi did not feature in the report, hinting at a potential gap in development opportunities in these countries, which could be detrimental in the increasingly competitive tourism sector.

Trevor Ward, Managing Director of W Hospitality Group, emphasized the impressive progress of hotel projects in East Africa, stating that the region stands out this year for its active development scenarios. As Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania expand their hotel capacities, they are not only enhancing their tourism offerings but are also likely contributing positively to their regional economies. This construction boom could lead to more job opportunities and increased investment in these countries, setting the stage for ongoing economic growth in the sector.
