R. Kaunas: I very much hope that we will present the draft law for the Kapčiamiestis training ground to the Seimas on Tuesday
Lithuanian Defense Minister R. Kaunas expresses hope that the draft law for the Kapčiamiestis training ground will be presented to the Seimas without delays, with expectations for urgent discussion and support from the parliament.
Lithuania's Defense Minister R. Kaunas has expressed optimism about the upcoming presentation of a draft law concerning the Kapčiamiestis training ground to the Seimas, scheduled for Tuesday. He emphasized the importance of swift legislative action to facilitate the establishment of military infrastructure in the region. Kaunas particularly highlighted discussions with the head of the Seimas about the possibility of expedited consideration of the proposal, indicating a strong push for the military training project to proceed rapidly.
The proposed Kapčiamiestis training ground will feature two functional zones: one designated for maneuvers and the other for combat shooting ranges. Approximately two-thirds of the total area will serve military training purposes, including maneuvering, tactical movement exercises, and administrative buildings. The area houses 77 properties; their owners or businesses operating there will have a choice to remain or sell their property to the state under a streamlined process over the next five years.
This development marks a significant step in Lithuania's defense strategy as the country seeks to enhance its military capabilities amid a regional security environment that remains challenging. The effective establishment of the training ground not only aims to improve military readiness but also reflects ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the national defense infrastructure in collaboration with parliamentary support and funding.
