More than 30 surgeries postponed in Fhemig hospitals in BH after workers' strike

A workers' strike at the Fundação Hospitalar do Estado de Minas Gerais (Fhemig) has led to the postponement of over 30 elective surgeries in Belo Horizonte hospitals.

A recent strike by employees of the Fundação Hospitalar do Estado de Minas Gerais (Fhemig) has resulted in significant disruptions to healthcare services in Belo Horizonte, with more than 30 elective surgeries being postponed. The strike, which began on Tuesday, October 17, led to the delay of 23 planned surgeries at the Hospital João XXIII and eight others at the Complexo de Especialidades, which includes the Júlia Kubitschek and Alberto Cavalcanti hospitals. While elective surgeries are affected, urgent and emergency procedures continue to be carried out without interruption.

Fhemig has stated that its healthcare teams are in active communication with the patients whose procedures have been postponed for clinical reassessment and to reorganize schedules. It has been emphasized that cases requiring more attention will be prioritized to ensure that critical patient needs are met. The situation is being monitored continuously, with Fhemig reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high standards of care, responsibility, and quality of assistance to the community.

The strike underscores the ongoing issues within the healthcare system in Brazil, particularly regarding labor relations and the needs of public health workers. With the postponement of surgeries, the strike highlights the fragility of elective care systems that can be easily disrupted by labor disputes, raising concerns about patient access to necessary medical procedures and the overall impact on public health in the region.
