High School Baseball Player's Suicide Due to Bullying: Five Former Team Members Ordered to Compensate

A court in Fukuoka has ordered five former members of a high school baseball team to pay compensation for their roles in bullying that contributed to a student's suicide.

A tragic case in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, involved a 16-year-old high school student who took his own life in 2018, after suffering severe bullying from fellow baseball team members. The lawsuit was brought by the victim's family, seeking both an apology and damages from six former students. On the 19th, the Kurume District Court ruled in favor of the family, ordering five of the six students to pay a total of approximately 1 million yen as compensation; however, the court declined to demand an apology. The bullying incidents reportedly occurred from July 2017 to June 2018, where the victim was subjected to humiliating treatment, such as having his pants and socks removed and his smartphone hidden multiple times. The situation escalated to psychological harassment which included being removed from a LINE chat group. The victim ultimately took his own life on June 22, 2018, just after enduring further harassment, which underscores the potentially dire consequences of bullying in school environments. In March 2019, a third-party committee from the prefectural educational board confirmed the occurrence of bullying and acknowledged a link between the harassment and the victim's tragic suicide. The Fukuoka Prefectural Police also launched an investigation into the bullying claims, indicating a broader societal concern regarding the implications of bullying in educational settings and the responsibilities of schools to protect their students.
