REA, Lotus Bank deliver N7.4bn renewable project in Ebonyi

The Rural Electrification Agency and Lotus Bank have secured N7.4 billion in funding to deploy renewable energy infrastructure in Ebonyi State, expected to benefit over 30,000 households and businesses.

The partnership between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Lotus Bank has successfully landed a significant funding milestone, securing N7.4 billion to facilitate the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure across eight strategic sites in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. This funding follows a previous landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two entities for a total of N100 billion aimed at enhancing renewable energy access in the region. The initial financing has been termed as a critical drawdown from the Lotus Bank facility, signifying the proactive steps being taken to foster renewable energy use in the local communities.

The initiative is set to deliver about 7 megawatts of renewable power, which is expected to have a considerable positive impact on the lives of over 30,000 households and local businesses in the region. The investment will cover various communities within Ohaozara Local Government Area, including Okposi, Mebiokpa, and Ohaozara itself, and extend to other areas like Ebunwana in Edda Local Government Area, as well as Unwana and Afikpo in Afikpo North. Among other targeted locations is Iboko in Izzi Local Government Area, reflecting the widespread benefit anticipated from the renewable energy project.

This move is not only a significant step towards increasing renewable energy access in Ebonyi State but also aligns with Nigeria's broader ambitions to enhance sustainability through green energy solutions. The deployment of this infrastructure is expected to drastically improve energy access and reliability for underserved communities, thereby bolstering economic activities and improving the quality of life for residents. The long-term implications may also include inspiring further investments in renewable energy across Nigeria, contributing to a transition towards more sustainable energy consumption practices nationwide.
