REA plans 500 power projects in N170bn 2026 budget
The Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria plans over 500 electrification projects in its 2026 budget totaling N170 billion to enhance power supply to rural areas.
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has announced its ambitious plan to execute over 500 electrification projects as part of its 2026 fiscal budget proposal totaling N170 billion. This initiative aims to improve access to reliable electricity for public institutions and underserved rural communities across Nigeria. Speaking at a recent budget defense session organized by the House Committee on Rural Electrification in Abuja, the agency's Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, emphasized the need for expanded electricity access, particularly to areas that have been historically underserved.
As part of the proposed budget, N100 billion has already been approved for the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, which is a flagship project tailored to provide sustainable and cost-effective electricity solutions to government institutions. This initiative is expected to significantly bolster the power supply to critical services within the public sector and further promote the use of renewable energy in Nigeria's electrification efforts. Aliyu highlighted the importance of this program in addressing Nigeria's long-standing energy challenges, while also underscoring its potential impact on economic development.
The targeted allocation of resources towards rural electrification reflects a strategic focus on improving infrastructure and social services in rural areas, thereby fostering economic viability and enhancing the quality of life for those communities. The execution of these projects is anticipated to create jobs and stimulate local economies, while also contributing to the overall goal of achieving universal access to clean and reliable energy in Nigeria by 2030. The agency's efforts align with the national vision of enhancing energy security and sustainable development throughout the country.
