LAWMA seeks stakeholders’ collaboration in waste management
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority emphasizes the need for stakeholder collaboration to improve waste management in the state.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of waste management in the state. This statement was made by the agency's Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, during the annual conference of the Property and Environment Writers Association of Nigeria held in Lagos. Gbadegesin highlighted that proper waste management is not only essential for the health of the public but also plays a vital role in controlling floods, ensuring environmental sustainability, and maintaining a well-functioning urban environment.
During his address, Gbadegesin, represented by Kunle Adebiyi, LAWMA's Executive Director of Finance, elaborated on the structured waste management system in place, where licensed private sector operators are responsible for household waste collection across different areas of Lagos. He emphasized that effective waste management is a critical urban governance issue that significantly impacts various facets of urban life, including public health and the environment. This structured system ensures that waste is managed efficiently, but it cannot succeed without the involvement and cooperation of all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and government agencies.
The statement shared on LAWMA’s Facebook page reiterates the call for public engagement in waste management practices. Gbadegesin urged community members to actively participate and collaborate with the agency and other stakeholders to foster a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment in Lagos. The collaboration of different entities is viewed as a crucial step toward addressing the numerous waste management challenges faced by the state, aiming to improve the quality of life for its residents and the overall environmental footprint of Lagos State.
