Five women serve sentences inside a police station after overcrowding in a prison in MT

Five women are serving sentences in a police station in Alta Floresta due to overcrowding in the local prison, raising concerns among law enforcement.

Five women are currently serving their sentences in a police station in Alta Floresta, located 800 km from Cuiabá, as the public prison is overcrowded. This situation has alarmed law enforcement officials, represented by the local police union, because federal law prohibits holding inmates in police stations without proper facilities for extended periods. The lack of adequate accommodation raises several safety and health concerns for both the inmates and the police personnel responsible for their custody.

The State Department of Justice (Sejus) has stated that since 2019, efforts have been made to create additional spaces within the prison system, having opened 4,870 new spots. However, there has been no specific mention of the overcrowding issue in Alta Floresta in their communications. According to the information released, construction is underway in various prison units that will result in 1,296 new slots, specifically adding 432 for female inmates, indicating the recognition of the increasing demand for female incarceration capacity.

Despite these efforts, the police union has criticized the present condition, arguing that holding individuals in a police station poses significant risks. It underscores the urgent need for better management and expansion of prison facilities to adhere to regulations and ensure the safety and rights of all individuals in custody. These continued criticisms highlight a systemic issue within Brazil's penal system and the challenges faced in managing overcrowding in prisons, which often leads to legal and humanitarian concerns.
