MP demands immediate transfer of inmates after cell closure leaves police station 150% over capacity in Amazonas
The Public Ministry of Amazonas is urging the urgent transfer of inmates due to severe overcrowding at a police station following the closure of one of its cells.
The Public Ministry of the State of Amazonas (MPAM) has urged the courts to take urgent action to alleviate overcrowding at the 73rd Interactive Police Station (DIP) in Novo Aripuanã, Amazonas. This call for action comes in light of worsening conditions after one of the two cells at the station was closed due to structural risks. According to MPAM, this closure has severely compromised the facility's capacity, as the remaining cell is now housing 10 detainees, well over its 4-person capacity.
The situation has led to an alarming 150% overcapacity, raising serious health and safety concerns. Reports indicate that the conditions are unsanitary, with one detainee being held in an adapted bathroom due to threats from another inmate. The Public Ministry argues that the current state of overcrowding and the use of inadequate holding facilities violate basic human rights and fail to meet the minimum standards required for prisoner treatment.
This request follows a civil civil action that has been ongoing since 2016 regarding the conditions within the unit. With inmate safety and health at stake, the urgency to address these critical issues signals a broader problem within the Brazilian prison system, where overcrowding and inadequate facilities are prevalent, highlighting the need for systemic reform and immediate solutions to improve living conditions for detainees in Amazonas and beyond.
