‘We made a mistake...’ Lebanon regrets taking sides in the US-Iran war

Lebanese Ambassador Hadi Jaber expressed regret over Lebanon's involvement and siding in the US-Iran conflict, condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf countries and noting Hezbollah's unilateral actions as problematic.

In an interview with Aaj Tak, Lebanese Ambassador Hadi Jaber discussed Lebanon's position in the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in relation to Iran and its actions against Gulf nations. He condemned Iran's military actions as unacceptable and emphasized that no country should attack another under any pretext. The ambassador's comments reflect a growing concern within Lebanon regarding its entanglement in external conflicts that do not directly involve it.

Ambassador Jaber also addressed a recent decision by the Lebanese government to label Hezbollah's military branch as illegal following its unprovoked rocket attacks on Israel. He highlighted the challenges posed by Hezbollah operating independently from the Lebanese government, indicating that this lack of control is a significant issue for national security. He reiterated that only the Lebanese military should have the authority to bear arms, underlining the need for unified command within the country's armed forces.

The ambassador expressed sorrow over Lebanon's involvement in what he described as a conflict that was not chosen by the nation and stated that these external conflicts, such as the one involving Gaza, should not have dragged Lebanon into them. The consequences of the ongoing violence have been devastating, with at least 912 fatalities, over 2,200 injuries, and a significant portion of the Lebanese population rendered homeless, representing 20% of the country. Many villages have suffered complete destruction, further complicating an already dire humanitarian situation.
