Expert: This is how Lebanon is connected to the war in Iran
An expert discusses the connections between recent attacks in Lebanon and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel.
On October 7, 2023, approximately a thousand armed men breached barriers around Gaza and targeted the Israeli civilian population. According to expert Alexander Atarodi, Israel's reactions to this event are partially motivating their present military actions in Lebanon, as they seek to enhance their strategic depth and create buffer zones in multiple locations. This situation emphasizes the escalating tensions and the impact on regional stability.
The impacted regions in southern and eastern Lebanon, particularly areas south and east of the Litani River, have seen significant displacement, with over 700,000 people forced to flee their homes. Atarodi warns that this number could rise to one million, reflecting the alarming humanitarian crisis emerging from the conflict. The urgency of the situation is marked by warnings of an impending escalation in military hostilities that threaten both the civilian population and regional security.
Additionally, the armed wing of Hezbollah, designated as a terrorist organization by the EU and closely allied with Iran, has ramped up aggression against Israel. Following past hostilities, a recent series of rocket attacks against Israel were launched as a reprisal for the targeted killing of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei. This retaliatory action indicates shifting dynamics in the conflict and raises concerns about future confrontations between Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon.
