Hezbollah Leader: This is Our Position on the War Against Iran
Hezbollah's Mahmoud Qamati outlines the party's position regarding military intervention in support of Iran, emphasizing that the decision will depend on the situation and Lebanon's stability.
Mahmoud Qamati, the Deputy Chairman of Hezbollah's Political Council, has restructured the party's stance on the war against Iran, providing a comprehensive view of the ongoing confrontation and its regional implications, particularly concerning Iran, Lebanon, and Israel. In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Qamati reiterated that Hezbollah is not neutral in this conflict, reflecting the sentiments of the party’s Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem, who stated clearly that “we are not neutral and will not be neutral.” However, Qamati also elaborated that the nature, methods, and timing of any military involvement would be contingent upon the leadership's assessments and developments on the ground.
Qamati explained that maintaining ambiguity about Hezbollah's position is a deliberate strategy to avoid instilling confidence in their adversaries, particularly Israel and its allies. He emphasized that any decision made would prioritize Lebanon’s security and stability while considering the concerns of Lebanese citizens about being drawn into an all-out war. This reflects a nuanced approach by Hezbollah as they navigate the complexities of regional conflict, where their interests and the potential for escalated violence are in constant tension.
Regarding potential Israeli aggression, Qamati warned that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to achieve his objectives concerning Iran, he might resort to extensive aggression against Lebanon. This statement indicates a strategic calculation on Hezbollah's part, recognizing that Israel may shift its focus to Lebanon should its campaign against Iran prove unsuccessful. Such dynamics highlight the precarious balance of power and the consequential impact of regional conflicts on Lebanese sovereignty and security.
