Water and sewage bills in Várzea Grande (MT) may rise by 24%; understand
Water and sewage rates in Várzea Grande could increase by over 24%, pending municipal approval.
Water and sewage rates in Várzea Grande, a city in the metropolitan region of Cuiabá, are proposed to rise by 24.33% according to a recommendation by the Mato Grosso Public Services Regulatory Agency (Ager-MT). This increase, raised on October 16, is still subject to approval from the city’s administration before it can be officially implemented. The proposed adjustment takes into account the fluctuations in the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) and aims to address the accumulated losses since the last rate determination in 2019.
The last rate increase occurred in June 2022, and the current adjustment has been influenced not only by inflation but also by a previous suggested increase of 21.74% that was introduced in 2025 but never put into effect. As a result, Várzea Grande's administration has requested a revision of the calculations based on February 2026 to ensure accuracy and fairness in the proposed changes. Ager-MT's regulatory director Jossy Soares emphasized that readjusting these tariffs is crucial for maintaining economic balance within the utility services offered.
This proposed increase could significantly impact residents and businesses in Várzea Grande, raising concerns about affordability and access to essential water and sanitation services. As public services often play a critical role in local quality of life and sustainability, the city administration's decision will be closely observed by the community for its short-term financial implications and long-term service quality. The ensuing discussions and potential changes highlight the ongoing challenges faced by local governments in managing utility pricing under inflationary pressures.
