Motorcycle license plates will become larger and clearer
New motorcycle license plates in South Korea are set to be 30% larger and more legible as part of a new system being implemented for better management and visibility.
The South Korean government has announced that new motorcycle license plates will increase in size by about 30% and feature improved clarity, in response to concerns about visibility and readability. This decision is part of the implementation of a nationwide standard numbering system aimed at enhancing the management of motorcycles, which have seen increased use, particularly due to the rise of delivery services. The new plates will forgo the display of administrative district names such as 'Seoul' or 'Gyeonggi' at the top, and will increase the dimensions from 210mm x 115mm to 210mm x 150mm, allowing for better recognition by enforcement equipment.
The changes will come into effect on the 20th, applying to newly registered motorcycles and those needing reissues due to damaged plates. Existing holders of regional plates can also opt for the new versions. Officials, including Park Jun-hyung of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, have expressed that this transition to a standardized motorcycle license plate system represents a significant advancement in the management framework for motorcycles, with the expectation that improved visibility will contribute to higher compliance rates among riders.
