Environmental contamination in Sabiá Park is being investigated in Uberlândia; 'there are point leaks,' says director of Futel
The investigation into possible environmental damage at Sabiá Park in Uberlândia, Brazil, was prompted by reports of pollution and waste accumulation in the area.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG) launched a Civil Inquiry in February to investigate potential environmental damage at Sabiá Park in Uberlândia, located in the Triângulo Mineiro region. Classified as 'open,' this procedure is being handled by the 10th Public Prosecutor's Office specialized in environmental matters and is currently awaiting technical expertise to move forward. The inquiry commenced following a complaint from councilwoman Amanda Gondim (PSB), which was bolstered by inspections and reports from biologist Ana Lúcia Bonfim, who recently revealed concerning evidence of pollution in the park.
The biologist provided photographic evidence showing the accumulation of trash and vegetation near drainage pipes within the area designated for preservation. She expressed her distress over the visible signs of contamination, stating, 'It is very sad and painful, especially for those working in the environmental field. The signs are evident to the naked eye.' This reaction underscores the growing concerns surrounding environmental degradation in urban parks and the need for proactive measures to address pollution.
In response to the allegations, the Municipal Environment Department began clearing debris from the park. A video captured on the 18th of the month showed improvements in the area, with reduced visible pollutants. This initiative indicates a commitment to restoring the park's integrity while highlighting the ongoing challenge of managing environmental issues in urban settings.
