City Hall identifies methane gas in area with cracked houses in Uberlândia

Uberlândia's municipality confirms the presence of methane gas underground amidst reports of cracked structures in the Residencial Integração neighborhood.

The city of Uberlândia has reported initial findings from its investigations into crack formations in the Residencial Integração neighborhood, specifically in the eastern region of the city. The municipal government confirmed the detection of methane gas in the underground area affected by these fissures, which have appeared in at least eight homes along with damage to asphalt and sidewalks since the end of February.

In a press release issued on Monday, the municipality stated that the methane was found in soil tests conducted at six locations within a defined area bounded by José Vinícius da Silva and Manoel Lúcio streets. Despite the detection of methane in the vicinity, there have been no reports of its presence inside the inspected homes. City officials reassured the public that, according to assessments from the Civil Defense, Fire Department, and state agencies, there is currently no imminent risk to residents, but the area remains under continuous monitoring.

Prior to the methane discovery, the municipal department was already investigating the causes behind the structural damage in the neighborhood. As a precautionary measure, local authorities are working to find the source of the gas and ensure the safety of the residents, while also addressing the concerns raised by the damaged properties. This situation highlights the importance of environmental monitoring and public safety measures in urban areas.
