Dr. Lai Labode announces plans to construct a N350 million drum, intended to be the tallest in the world, to enhance tourism in Ogun State, Nigeria.
Dr. Lai Labode, the founder of the cultural movement Egbaliganza, has revealed plans for a monumental project in Ogun State, Nigeria, with the aim of building the world’s tallest drum at a cost of N350 million. This initiative is not only a creative endeavor but also a strategic move to boost tourism and stimulate the local economy. The announcement was made during a briefing in Abeokuta, coinciding with the celebration of this year’s Egbaliganza together with the 39th Lisabi Festival.
The Egbaliganza movement, motivated by the Alake and paramount ruler of Egba land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, aims to inspire local citizens to contribute innovative ideas for the development of Egba land and Nigeria as a whole. Since its inception in 2024, the cultural celebration has encouraged a blend of contemporary fashion with traditional Egba heritage, showcasing a commitment to preserving and promoting the area’s rich cultural identity. This focus on cultural advancement highlights the importance of local customs in fostering a sense of pride and attracting visitors.
By constructing the tallest drum, Labode hopes to create a landmark that not only represents the unique culture of the Egba people but also serves as a focal point for tourism in Ogun State. This cultural icon could potentially transform the local economy by enhancing the region's visibility, encouraging local and international tourism, and attracting investments. As the project progresses, it will be essential to monitor how it influences the cultural landscape and economic vitality of Ogun and the surrounding areas.
