The Oyo State Government is enhancing preparations for the 2026 World Egungun Festival with significant support from traditional stakeholders.
The Oyo State Government is actively ramping up its preparations for the upcoming 2026 World Egungun Festival, engaging traditional leaders and organizations to ensure the festival's success. A recent meeting was held by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with members of the Ijo Oje Parapo Welfare Association, where plans were discussed to further promote and structure the festival. The involvement of Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a significant traditional figure, marks a commitment from local leadership to bolster support for this cultural event.
During the meeting, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, emphasized the festival's growing international recognition. He pointed out that interest has not only emerged locally but also from overseas, notably Brazil, as the government aims to reconnect the diaspora with the cultural roots linked to the Egungun tradition in Oyo State. This indicates a shift towards making the festival not just a local celebration but a global cultural event that spans continents.
The Commissioner expressed optimism about the festival's potential to achieve worldwide recognition, suggesting that with adequate structure and promotion, it could even attain a listing by UNESCO. The government is encouraging organizations and individuals involved to maintain their support for the festival, as its success is viewed as crucial in promoting Oyo State's rich cultural heritage and possibly enhancing its tourism sector in the future.
