Warning from the Head of the Latvian Security Service about Threats from Belarus

The head of Latvia's security service warns that Belarusian tactics towards migrants are becoming increasingly aggressive.

The head of the Latvian Security Service has issued a warning that the tactics employed by Belarus and Russia have become notably more aggressive in recent times. One area of concern is the methods used to provoke migrants attempting to cross the border into Latvia, including the showing of manipulated video footage depicting supposed mistreatment by border officials. This footage has attempted to portray border guards as excessively violent, depicting them as having beaten, tortured, and expelled migrants unjustly.

Upon further analysis of these disturbing propaganda videos, security officials observed that the evidence of mistreatment was fabricated, particularly noting that the scars shown by individuals in the videos did not appear to be genuine. The head of the service highlighted the flaws in this propaganda, asserting that it involved simple and poor makeup techniques rather than real injuries. Nevertheless, he cautioned that migrants are being trained to engage in more aggressive actions, indicating a troubling escalation in the situation at the border.

In addition, he pointed out that Belarus has been ramping up its border infrastructure, building warehouses and hotels, and establishing camps for migrants. These developments suggest a systematic approach by Belarus in handling the migration crisis, potentially using it as a tool for political leverage. The export of this crisis to Baltic borders poses significant challenges for regional security, demanding vigilant monitoring and a coordinated response among affected nations.
