Due to security considerations, entry into Latvia denied to a Belarusian citizen
Latvian authorities denied entry to a Belarusian citizen on security grounds as border control measures remain heightened due to the increase in illegal migrant flows from Belarus.
On Thursday, Latvian border authorities denied entry to a Belarusian citizen citing security concerns. This action comes as part of ongoing efforts to manage the flow of illegal migration from Belarus, particularly in light of the heightened risks associated with this issue. The government has extended the strengthened border protection regime until June 30 of this year, particularly in areas near the Belarus border, which have seen increased illegal migration attempts. To date, there have been no reported illegal attempts to cross the Latvia-Belarus border this week, reflecting the effectiveness of the ongoing control measures.
This year, a total of 36 individuals have been prevented from illegally crossing the border, highlighting the active measures taken by Latvia to secure its borders against increasing threats from migrant flows. The enhanced controls are implemented in specific regions, including Ludza and KrΔslava, where the risk of illegal crossings is particularly pronounced. It has been reported that, in 2025 alone, Latvian border authorities successfully prevented 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarus-Latvia border, marking a significant effort to discourage illegal migration in response to the challenges posed by Belarus.
Additionally, humanitarian considerations have been a factor in border management; last year, 31 illegal migrants were allowed to cross the border due to humanitarian reasons. This reflects Latvia's balanced approach to border security, attempting to secure its territory while also considering the welfare of individuals seeking safety. The situation remains fluid, and continued vigilance will be critical as the region grapples with border security and migration issues moving forward.
