Ukrainian air defence downs 128 out of 147 Russian drones overnight
Ukrainian air forces successfully intercepted 128 out of 147 Russian drones during a night-time attack on March 17.
On the night of March 17, Ukrainian air defence forces engaged in a significant operation against a large-scale drone attack from Russia, successfully downing 128 of the 147 drones launched. The attack involved various models, including Shahed and Gerbera drones, and was part of ongoing hostilities between the two nations. Reports indicated that some drones managed to evade interception, resulting in hits at multiple locations across Ukraine.
The drones were reportedly launched from several regions within Russia, including Oryol, Kursk, and Bryansk, as well as locations in Crimea. Of the drones involved, over 70 were identified as Shahed loitering munitions. This scale of aerial assault highlights the persistent threat that Ukraine faces in the ongoing conflict, as Russia continues to utilize drone technology to strike at Ukrainian infrastructure and military positions.
In response to this threat, Ukraine's air defence strategy has been under constant adaptation, utilizing a mix of aircraft, anti-aircraft missile systems, and electronic warfare measures to protect its airspace. The effectiveness of these systems can be seen in the reported interception rates; however, the continued successful launches by Russian forces illustrate the challenge of maintaining air superiority in such an active conflict environment.
