Middle School Students Riding Brake-less 'Fixie Bikes' Threaten Residents... Parents Charged by Police

Two middle school students in Incheon have been charged for dangerous riding of fixie bikes, leading to their parents being criminally implicated for neglect.

In Incheon, South Korea, two middle school students were found riding fixie bicycles without brakes, threatening local residents and school students. The bicycles, which lack a braking system and have a fixed gear on the back wheel, are popular among youth but pose significant safety risks due to their inability to stop quickly. Authorities charged the parents of the students under the Child Welfare Act for neglecting their responsibility to monitor their children's activities. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of such bicycles and the responsibilities of parents in supervising their children's behavior.

The Incheon Namdong Police Station reported that the students had engaged in reckless behavior by using foul language and threatening others while riding their bikes in the vicinity of their school. Such actions not only compromise their safety but also disturb the community, prompting the police to previously advise the parents about potential disciplinary measures for the children's dangerous riding. After further incidents were reported, the decision was made to formally charge the guardians for their negligence.

Given the ongoing disturbances and safety issues, the police agency is considering further actions against parents whose minors continue to ride fixie bikes recklessly. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for proper supervision and accountability in preventing youth from engaging in dangerous activities, particularly in public spaces where safety is a concern.
