Several Violations Found in the Use of Micromobility Tools During School Breaks

Riga's municipality reported several violations regarding the use of micromobility devices during the spring school break, highlighting inadequate user control by providers and low insurance coverage for personal vehicles.

During the recent school break in Riga, the municipality's police conducted checks on micromobility devices and discovered numerous violations. The findings suggest that there is insufficient control over users by service providers. This lack of oversight is concerning, particularly as operation without civil liability insurance was observed. The Insurance Association noted that while vehicles owned by companies are generally insured, only about 30% of those owned by individuals have coverage, which raises safety concerns for users and the public alike.

The checks, which inspected a total of 104 micromobility devices, revealed significant noncompliance with local regulations. The police encountered 35 cases where users failed to present a bicycle or any category of vehicle driver's license, indicating a gap in regulatory enforcement. As more people take to the streets with electric scooters, bicycles, and shared devices during the warmer weather, it's crucial to ensure that proper licenses and adherence to shared usage rules are enforced.

The increased mobility during the spring break comes as the micromobility season has not fully commenced, yet the warmer weather has prompted more individuals to utilize these devices. With the rise in usage, the municipality emphasizes the need for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns to promote responsible use to enhance public safety and mitigate risks associated with unregulated usage of micromobility tools.
