Rescued kayaker 'didn't panic' despite missing overnight

A 73-year-old kayaker, who went missing overnight north of Adelaide, was rescued after he paddled away from familiar waters but remained calm throughout his ordeal.

A 73-year-old man was rescued by helicopter after spending a night lost while kayaking approximately 40 kilometers north of Adelaide. Despite being disoriented and unable to find his way back, he maintained a calm demeanor throughout the experience, stating that he had made the same trip 'about a thousand times' before but lost his bearings when he couldn't see the entrances to familiar channels. He was without a mobile phone as he had left it in his car, yet he wore a life jacket which likely contributed to his safety during the ordeal.

The kayaker initially aimed to paddle to St Kilda, about 20 kilometers south of his point of origin, but lost direction and decided to retrace his steps without success. He spotted a rescue helicopter in the night, which he indicated had missed him, indicating a challenging rescue situation due to visibility and navigation in the dark. Eventually, search efforts led to his rescue being executed efficiently by the SA Ambulance Service, which landed a helicopter on a sandbank to retrieve him safely.

Rescue team member Clinton Daniels noted the successful landing and retrieval of the kayaker, who was unharmed and had suitable clothing for the conditions. This incident highlights the importance of safety precautions, such as wearing life jackets and having means of communication when undertaking water activities, even for those with extensive experience. The calm response of the kayaker under distressing circumstances also emphasizes the value of psychological resilience in emergency situations.
