Rains expose drainage problem on Francisco Junqueira Avenue: 'every year there’s some surprise,' says businessman
Heavy rains in Ribeirão Preto have highlighted a persistent drainage issue, particularly affecting local business owners on Francisco Junqueira Avenue.
On Tuesday, rains in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo caused significant flooding and downed trees, shedding light on a chronic drainage problem that impacts local businesses along Francisco Junqueira Avenue. Businessman Paulo Ricardo Carvalho, who has operated in the area since 1989, expressed frustration over the recurrent flooding, stating that despite occasional works to improve drainage, issues persist each year. He noted that quick rainstorms lead to a rapid increase in the level of the Retiro Saudoso stream, frequently causing the area to flood and threatening his and other local businesses.
Carvalho shared that he has taken measures to protect his business from flooding by installing a metal door at his establishment, which prevented water from entering during this week’s heavy rains. He described this flooding as a routine occurrence that forces him to respond to the water levels outside his business regularly. Despite various efforts and governmental interventions over the years, Carvalho affirmed that the root problem of the drainage system remains unresolved, leading to anxiety among business owners in the region.
As these floods recur annually, they not only disrupt commerce but also place local infrastructure under strain. The situation calls for a sustainable long-term solution to the drainage challenges faced by Ribeirão Preto. Local authorities may need to conduct a comprehensive review of the area’s drainage system to establish effective measures that can alleviate these seasonal disruptions and support the business community in a more secure environment.
