Large tree 'closes' avenue and hits storefront during storm in Ribeirão Preto

A severe storm in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, caused flooding and the collapse of a large tree that blocked a key avenue and damaged a store.

On the afternoon of January 17th, a heavy rainstorm hit Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, leading to significant flooding in the city, particularly on Avenida Francisco Junqueira, one of its main thoroughfares. The rainfall was so intense that it resulted in the fall of a large tree, which not only blocked the avenue but also damaged the facade of a nearby store. This tree fall highlights the dangers of severe weather events, especially in urban areas where large trees may be more prone to collapse under heavy rain.

As the floodwaters rose, the level of the Retiro Saudoso stream, which runs through the avenue, increased significantly, causing parts of the surrounding streets to become submerged. Eye-witness accounts from local shopkeepers and residents noted the chaos ensued as people attempted to navigate the flooded streets. One remarkable rescue was captured on video, showing a woman being pulled to safety by a tractor from the inundated avenue, demonstrating the urgency of the situation.

In addition to the falling tree on Avenida Francisco Junqueira, there were also reports of another tree falling at the intersection with Rua Liberdade, further complicating the already dire circumstances. The combination of these incidents points to vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure when faced with extreme weather, raising concerns about the need for better emergency preparedness and tree management in the city to prevent such accidents in the future.
