Heavy rains flood houses, collapse bridge, and leave homeless in cities of Vale do Ribeira

Severe rainfall in the Vale do Ribeira region of São Paulo has led to flooding, displacement of residents, and infrastructure damage.

Recent heavy rains in the Vale do Ribeira region of São Paulo have caused significant damage, leaving many residents homeless and leading to the collapse of a bridge. Approximately 60 individuals had to evacuate their homes in Jacupiranga, while a bridge fell in Iporanga and various flooding incidents were reported in Eldorado. The State Civil Defense reported 18 homes flooded in Jacupiranga alone, with several residents displaced and others in urgent need of assistance.

Local authorities have provided updates on the situation, with the Civil Defense of Jacupiranga reporting two families currently homeless and 19 others displaced. Additionally, around 10 families are stranded in the Fazenda Rosseti area. Emergency response teams are actively working in the region, having recently rescued an elderly woman who was in need of immediate help and transported her to a family member's home. The rainfall has disrupted life in several towns, creating a pressing need for support and resources to assist those affected.

The implications of these floods extend beyond immediate displacement; they highlight the vulnerabilities of communities in the region and the need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness strategies.
