Market is ordered to pay R$ 20,000 to elderly woman who suffered injuries after slipping on a puddle of detergent
A São Paulo court has ordered a supermarket to pay R$ 20,000 in damages to an 81-year-old woman who was injured after slipping on a puddle of detergent in the store.
The São Paulo Court of Justice has ruled that Assaí Atacadista, a supermarket located in Santos, must pay R$ 20,000 to an 81-year-old woman who suffered multiple injuries after slipping on a puddle of detergent. The incident occurred in November 2024, when the woman was shopping with her husband. According to her lawyers, the store failed to provide adequate warning signs regarding the slippery condition, which contributed to the accident.
The elderly woman sustained injuries to her shoulder, spine, and head from the fall, which have compromised her ability to perform daily activities without assistance. Her legal representatives argued for a compensation amounting to at least 50 times the minimum wage, indicating the severity of her injuries and the impact on her quality of life. The court's decision underscores the importance of safety measures in retail environments to protect customers from foreseeable hazards.
Assaí Atacadista has refrained from commenting on the ongoing legal proceedings, maintaining that they do not discuss cases in progress. This ruling may set a precedent in similar cases where negligence in public spaces leads to injuries, potentially prompting other victims to seek legal action against businesses for inadequate safety precautions.
