Mototaxi drivers suspected of assaulting and calling revelers 'fags' are arrested in Salvador
Two mototaxi drivers in Salvador have been arrested for assaulting and using homophobic slurs against carnival revelers.
In Salvador, Brazil, two mototaxi drivers were arrested for allegedly assaulting and hurling homophobic slurs at carnival attendees. The suspects, who are brothers aged 28 and 31, were taken into custody on February 17 after the local police executed preventive arrest warrants. They face serious charges, including aggravated assault, arbitrary exercise of reason which denotes taking the law into one's own hands, and racial slander, which in Brazil now includes homophobic attacks following a legislation update in 2019.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 18 during the carnival festivities. The victims had hired the mototaxi service and were assaulted after arriving at their destination in the Cabula VI neighborhood. It was reported that upon reaching the location, one of the victims found his cellphone was dead, which may have triggered the altercation. The assailants, feeling empowered by the festive atmosphere, expressed aggressive behavior towards the victims, leading to their injuries.
This case highlights ongoing issues related to homophobia and violence in Brazil, particularly towards the LGBTQ+ community during public celebrations like Carnival, which are meant to be inclusive and celebratory. The legal framework now allows for more severe repercussions against such crimes, aiming to deter similar acts and promote equality within Brazilian society. The police are actively investigating the incident further, as more details could emerge concerning the drivers' motivations and backgrounds.
