Medicine course at the Rio Paranaíba campus of UFV authorized by MEC

The Medicine course at the Federal University of Viçosa's Rio Paranaíba campus has been approved by Brazil's Ministry of Education and is expected to launch its first class in 2026.

The Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) has approved a new Medicine course at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), located in the Alto Paranaíba region. An announcement was made by Education Minister Camilo Santana during a visit to the university on October 16, indicating that the first selection of students is set for this year, with an inaugural class of 28 students and an annual admission model. This initiative aims to enhance medical education accessibility in less urbanized regions of Brazil.

In preparation for the course, UFV will hire 13 new faculty members to support the educational program in the upcoming semester. The university will continue to follow recommendations from the Commission for Monitoring and Monitoring Medical Schools (Camem) regarding the hiring of additional teaching and administrative staff in the following years. This emphasis on workforce planning underscores the commitment to establish a robust medical training program and ensure it meets local needs.

The MEC's strategy to introduce medical courses in federal universities across various regions aims to decentralize medical education and address the disparity in medical services between urban and rural areas. By fostering the development of medical professionals in areas where they are critically needed, the government hopes to improve healthcare access and delivery in underserved communities throughout Brazil.
