MEC imposes sanctions on the medical course at UFPA after unsatisfactory performance in Enamed
The Brazilian Ministry of Education has sanctioned the medical course at the Federal University of Pará due to its lowest score in the Enamed exam among state universities.
The Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) has announced sanctions against the medical program at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) following its lowest score in the 2025 National Examination of Medical Education (Enamed) among state universities. The program received a score of 1, the lowest possible, prompting MEC to take action to address the quality of medical education in the region. A response from UFPA has been requested but is pending.
These sanctions are part of a broader initiative by MEC, which has introduced five regulations aimed at institutions showing unsatisfactory results in the Enamed. Across the country, a total of 351 medical courses were evaluated, and 107 of those received scores of 1 or 2, making them subject to proportional sanctions based on their students’ performance. This comprehensive assessment targets the overall quality of medical education in Brazil, indicating that the government is serious about improving standards in higher education.
The Enamed exam is conducted annually by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) and serves as a crucial tool for assessing the quality of medical training. The low performance of UFPA not only highlights potential issues within the institution but also raises concerns about the competency of future healthcare professionals in the region. The implications of these sanctions could lead to significant changes in curriculum and teaching methods as the program strives to improve its standing in future evaluations.
