More than a thousand dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies in action in the capital

Over 1,000 dogs and cats were vaccinated against rabies in Rio Branco as part of a special campaign for National Animal Day.

A special rabies vaccination campaign took place in Rio Branco over the weekend, successfully immunizing 1,030 dogs and cats. The initiative was organized in conjunction with the celebration of National Animal Day on Saturday, the 14th. The distribution of vaccinations included 742 animals on Saturday and an additional 288 on Sunday, effectively expanding the city’s rabies vaccination coverage.

Rabies is a viral disease regarded as one of the deadliest zoonoses, capable of being transmitted to humans. Vaccinating dogs and cats is identified as the primary means of halting the circulation of the rabies virus and minimizing health risks associated with potential transmission. This public health strategy is deemed essential due to the high lethality rate of rabies. The campaign was conducted by the Municipal Health Department (Semsa), highlighting the importance of community health initiatives.

According to data from Semsa, the city administered a total of 38,289 rabies vaccine doses in 2025, demonstrating a significant commitment to controlling this disease. Such efforts reflect the ongoing necessity for vaccination campaigns to protect both animal and human populations from rabies, underscoring a proactive approach in public health efforts within the municipality of Rio Branco.
