Cuiabans spend 52% of their salary on food each month

Residents of Cuiabá allocate 52.9% of their salary to food expenses according to a recent survey by Conab and Dieese.

Residents of Cuiabá are reportedly spending an average of 52.9% of their monthly salary on food, as revealed by a study conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab) and the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese). This survey, which was released in February, evaluates economic conditions across all state capitals in Brazil, indicating the financial strain on households as they prioritize food expenses amid rising living costs.

For individuals earning the minimum wage, the research highlights that they allocate about 46.13% of their net income to cover the cost of a basic food basket. This figure accounts for the mandatory deduction of 7.5% for social security contributions, reflecting the challenges faced by low-income workers in managing their financial obligations. The findings suggest that food security is a significant concern for families in this region, shedding light on the broader socioeconomic issues affecting many parts of the country.

Additionally, the average monthly cost of living in Mato Grosso is estimated to be around R$ 3,360, which includes essential expenses such as housing, utilities, and daily consumption. This analysis indicates that Cuiabá ranks as the fourth capital with the highest food expenditure relative to income, emphasizing the economic difficulties faced by its residents, and pointing to the urgent need for policies aimed at alleviating financial burdens on working-class families in Brazil.
