Catholic researcher urges deputies to promote moral sex education materials

A researcher from the Catholic organization 'Opus Dei' has proposed new moral sex education materials to be introduced in Latvian educational institutions during a meeting with lawmakers.

On Tuesday, members of the Latvian Saeima's Sustainable Development Commission heard from Manuel Hoakins Fernandez-Gonsales, a researcher from the Catholic organization 'Opus Dei', about his proposals to introduce new moral sex education materials in Latvia's educational institutions. This initiative aims to provide an alternative perspective to existing sex education programs, particularly those advocated by the organization 'Papardes zieds', which has been prominent in offering informational and practical support for youth, parents, and educators regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Fernandez-Gonsales highlighted that his approach to sex education contrasts sharply with that of 'Papardes zieds'. He, along with his collaborator Dzintra Atstāje, presented their findings emphasizing the importance of promoting values based on family formation within the Latvian educational system. They assert that although sexual education and family formation values are established in Latvian legislation and guidelines for student upbringing, there is currently a lack of consistency and alignment in their implementation in schools.

This discourse reflects broader social debates in Latvia regarding the content and direction of sex education, particularly the tension between more progressive approaches focusing on comprehensive sexual health and rights and traditional views centering around family values. The outcome of these discussions could significantly impact the curricula of educational institutions across Latvia, shaping the future understanding of sexual education among students.
