LU study: There is a clear need for a unified approach to sexual education in society

A recent study from Latvia highlights the necessity for a cohesive strategy in sexual education, reflecting its current integration into various subjects rather than being a standalone topic.

In Latvia, health education has not been taught as a separate subject in schools for several years, as its content is incorporated into natural sciences, biology, social studies, and other subjects across both primary and secondary education levels. As students progress, the curriculum addresses a range of topics including nutrition, physical activity, sexual and reproductive health, infections, vaccination, hygiene, mental health, safety, first aid, trauma risks, addictions, as well as human body development. This integrated approach is intended to be age-appropriate and considers developmental peculiarities of the students.

Laura Joma, the senior expert from the Methodical Support Department of the State Education Development Agency, clarified during a subcommittee meeting that the integrated approach to health education is dictated by educational standards and guidelines for upbringing. Teachers follow model curricula daily, which means that health issues are addressed across various subjects. This approach aims to build a comprehensive framework for students regarding health matters, ensuring they receive adequate information as they advance through their education.

The findings of the study underline the pressing need for a unified approach to sexual education, particularly as it is currently fragmented across many subjects. The study suggests that better coordination and a clear focal point in the curriculum for sexual health education could enhance the understanding and awareness among students, ultimately fostering a healthier society. It reflects a growing recognition of the importance of consistent sexual education that can effectively address contemporary issues faced by youth.
