Construction of the Oslofjord Tunnel Expansion to Start Soon

Construction of the second lane in the Oslofjord Tunnel is set to begin this summer, aimed at improving traffic safety and capacity by 2033.

This summer, the construction of the second lane of the Oslofjord Tunnel will commence, with the goal of increasing traffic safety and accessibility in the region. The new tunnel, which will feature four lanes, is expected to be completed by 2033. The project has been awarded to the construction company Veidekke, with a contract valued at 5.4 billion Norwegian kroner. The Norwegian parliament has allocated 7.75 billion kroner for this endeavor, which will also be partially financed through tolls.

Currently, more than 11,000 vehicles, including a significant amount of heavy traffic, traverse the existing tunnel daily. The necessity for occasional closures due to incidents has considerable repercussions for traffic flow. The addition of a new lane in the Oslofjord Tunnel is anticipated to enhance not only accessibility but also predictability and safety for all road users. The benefits are particularly vital for commuters traveling under the Oslofjord between Hurum and Drøbak in Akershus.

The implementation of this project reflects a strategic investment in infrastructure, addressing the growing transport demands in the area and indicating government support for improved transportation networks. As construction progresses, the focus will be on minimizing disruptions while prioritizing the safety and efficiency of travel routes for the public. This expansion highlights the ongoing efforts by Norway to modernize its transport systems and accommodate increasing traffic volume in the region.
