New Ölfusá Bridge Begins to Take Shape
Construction of the new Ölfusá Bridge is progressing and taking shape, with completion anticipated by autumn 2028.
Construction of the new Ölfusá Bridge is currently in full swing, with significant progress noted by project manager Höskuldur Tryggvason from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. The new bridge, which is situated further east than the old one that leads towards Selfoss, aims to redirect traffic away from the urban area. No unforeseen issues have arisen so far, and the project is moving ahead smoothly according to the management.
The bridge will be 330 meters long, and construction involves ThG Verk, which is working on forming the foundations on both riverbanks and on the island located in the middle of the Ölfusá River. A steady workforce of around forty employees is currently engaged in the project, with the number expected to increase as spring approaches, indicating a growing momentum in the construction efforts. This undertaking is part of a larger array of infrastructure projects initiated across the country to enhance transportation.
The Ölfusá Bridge project is significant for local transportation and infrastructure improvements, representing one of the major engineering endeavors in Iceland. As the project develops, it not only aims to alleviate congestion in urban areas but also reflects the broader commitment of local authorities to enhance connection and accessibility within the region. The bridge is set to become an essential part of the local road network once completed in 2028, impacting how traffic flows in and out of Selfoss and surrounding areas.
