The works nominated for the Latvian Literature Award in the first round and the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award have been announced
The first round nominees for the Latvian Literature Award and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award have been revealed, with translator Jānis Krastiņš being honored.
In anticipation of one of the central events in Latvian literature, the Latvian Literature Award (LALIGABA), the award's expert committee has announced the longlist of nominated authors and works, as well as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award, translator Jānis Krastiņš. A total of 156 works submitted by 31 publishers have been considered for the award for books published in 2025.
The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Jānis Krastiņš for his significant contributions to Latvian literature. Literary critic and museum worker Arnis Koroševskis noted that while Krastiņš's name might not be immediately recognizable to many readers compared to more frequently cited Latvian translators, he should be. Although Krastiņš began his translating career during the period of national awakening, he became particularly prolific in the 21st century, translating many notable works into Latvian.
The list of nominated works showcases the diverse landscape of contemporary Latvian literature and highlights the vital role of translators in bringing foreign literature to Latvian readers. The excitement around the awards not only reflects the importance of literature in Latvia but also emphasizes the ongoing dialogue between local and global literary cultures, with Krastiņš's work standing as a bridge in that conversation.
