Annelinna Library Exhibition Presents Childhood Memories of Estonians in Canada

The Annelinna Library in Tartu showcases an exhibition featuring the childhood memories of Estonians living in Canada, compiled by the Estonian Museum Abroad in collaboration with the Estonian Literary Museum.

The Annelinna Library in Tartu is currently hosting an exhibition titled 'Grown Up in Canada: Childhood and Youth in the Memories of Estonians in Canada'. This exhibition has been curated by the Estonian Museum Abroad (VEMU) in cooperation with the Estonian Literary Museum, bringing together a collection of memories and photographs from Estonians living in Canada. Approximately 30 stories have been included, which were collected from 2021 onwards, highlighting the experiences of both middle-aged and younger generations of Estonian expatriates.

The gathered personal memories reveal how the Estonian language, schooling, social life, and community initiatives have played a crucial role in preserving identity and maintaining connections with Estonia across generations. Many contributors share their struggles with dual identity, particularly in school settings where Estonian names were often not recognized or accepted. A poignant example from the exhibition illustrates the personal challenges faced by children as they navigated their cultural identity in a foreign educational system.

This exhibition not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Estonians in Canada but also emphasizes the importance of storytelling in preserving community history and identity. It serves as a reminder of the unique experiences that come with being part of a diaspora while also highlighting the lasting connections to one’s homeland. As the Estonian community in Canada continues to evolve, exhibitions like this contribute significantly to the understanding and appreciation of their cultural narratives.
