A chance to take a look at the rarest Estonian books

An exhibition titled 'Estonian Book 500. Relics in Tartu' opens at the Estonian Literary Museum, showcasing rare and significant Estonian printed materials.

The Estonian Literary Museum will host an exhibition called 'Estonian Book 500. Relics in Tartu', opening Thursday at 4 PM. This exhibition brings a part of last year's significant book exhibition held at the Niguliste Museum in Tallinn, enhanced by the unique collections from the museum's archival library. During the opening, notable speakers including curator Aivar Põldvee and relic keepers Ave Pill and Merike Kiipus will share insights, accompanied by musical interludes by Helen Kõmmus.

The event forms part of the ongoing Estonian Book Year celebration, and it serves as an opportunity for individuals who missed last year's exhibition to engage with some of the rarest and most meaningful printed works in Estonian history. The exhibition features notable items, including the legendary 'aabitsakukk' (a children's primer), which has journeyed from Tallinn to Tartu to spread its wings, enhancing both the main hall and the foyer of the Literary Museum, according to event organizers.

The tradition of showcasing exhibitions during the Book Year has its roots in past national celebrations aimed at fostering a greater appreciation for Estonian literature and its heritage. With this exhibition, the Estonian Literary Museum not only highlights unique literary artifacts but also invites the public to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Estonia's literary history, encouraging further exploration of local treasures and cultural identity.
