Elkjøp employees receive a back payment of 400,000 kroner for overtime hours

Elkjøp employees have reached a settlement that results in back payments totaling 400,000 kroner for unpaid overtime after a lengthy negotiation process.

In a notable resolution, employees of Elkjøp have successfully secured back payments amounting to 400,000 kroner for unpaid overtime after a protracted negotiation with management that lasted three years. The issue came to light when corporate representative Atle Fjæreide Steen discovered that two employees at different Elkjøp stores had not received proper compensation for their overtime hours. The situation escalated as 28 employees subsequently filed a lawsuit against Elkjøp, seeking a total of 1.2 million kroner in unpaid overtime wages.

The court hearings were initially set to take place in Oslo District Court from March 24 to 26, but before the case could be adjudicated, the parties reached a settlement agreement. This resolution is particularly significant as it underscores the ongoing conflict regarding overtime payments and the differing interpretations of work time agreements between employees and management. The crux of the disagreement lay in whether there was any existing agreement on average working time calculations.

Under such agreements, employees could theoretically work up to 50 hours in a given week without receiving overtime pay, as long as they worked fewer hours in subsequent weeks to average out to the standard 37.5 hours over two weeks. This situation highlights the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding of work agreements in the retail sector, particularly in regards to overtime compensation.
