Fake lawyers, fake police... How two young people extorted tens of thousands of euros over the phone
Two young individuals in France used a fraudulent phone scheme to extort over €50,000 from victims by impersonating police and lawyers.
In October 2025, a report was filed at the Lyon police station by a victim who received a phone call from a man impersonating a police officer. The caller, identified as Dany.B, claimed that the victim's daughter had just hit a pregnant woman in the street, and he transferred the call to a woman impersonating a lawyer, Wiktoria K. Under the pretense of urgency, she demanded a deposit of €32,000 to prevent the victim's daughter from being jailed.
Since the initiation of this deceptive scheme, the two suspects, aged 20 and 19, are believed to have defrauded a total of seven individuals, accumulating over €50,000 in illicit gains. The police are currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the matter to uncover the full extent of the operation and any additional victims that might have fallen prey to their tactics. The case highlights a disturbing trend in which fraudsters exploit trust and leverage emotional distress to manipulate victims into parting with their money.
This incident underscores the importance of public awareness regarding scams and the need for individuals to verify any urgent requests for money, especially when posed by someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer or legal representative. As the investigation progresses, authorities hope to deter such criminal activities through intensified community vigilance and public education campaigns about recognizing and reporting fraudulent incidents.
