Fraudsters extorted more than 11.6 thousand euros from two residents

Two residents were deceived by fraudsters posing as electrical network workers and police officers, leading to the loss of over 11.6 thousand euros.

According to data from the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, on February 7, a report was received regarding an incident that occurred on February 6 when an elderly man, born in 1940, in Vilnius was contacted by unknown individuals who impersonated an electrical network worker and a police officer. The fraudsters managed to deceive the man, extorting 6,660 euros from him during the phone call.

Simultaneously, the Klaipeda County Chief Police Commissariat reported that on the same day, police received a notification that a woman, born in 1954, was also a victim of fraud, having been tricked out of approximately 5,000 euros between May 12, 2025, and February 6, 2026. This highlights a troubling trend in Lithuania, where elderly individuals are increasingly targeted by scammers posing as legitimate authorities.

Both cases have led to the initiation of pre-trial investigations for fraud. The police are urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls or messages to help combat this growing issue, especially given the vulnerability of older citizens in such scams.
