Uniting forces for a beautiful idea – the contours of the Gelgaudiškis port are emerging
The Gelgaudiškis port project aims to revitalize and expand shipping on the Neman River through collaboration between the Klaipeda Port Authority and the Sakiu district municipality.
The Gelgaudiškis port project has begun to take shape as the Klaipeda Port Authority and the Sakiu district municipality have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop this initiative. The mayor of Sakiu, Raimondas Januševičius, noted that the municipality has been working on this project for three years, indicating a strong commitment to its realization. The local government views the port as a potential key factor in enhancing commercial activities along the Neman River.
Algis Latakas, the director general of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, expressed optimism that the opening of the port in Gelgaudiškis is merely a matter of time. Preparatory works for the project have already commenced, including topographic and bathymetric surveys and the drafting of proposed designs for the port's quay. The municipality is being supported by the Directorate of Internal Waterways in these preliminary efforts, which are crucial for making the port viable.
Although a small cargo dock was established in Gelgaudiškis in 1973, it was never expanded to function as a fully operational river cargo port. The Sakiu district government now sees this project not only meeting business needs but also serving broader community and economic development goals. Reviving and enhancing the port could serve as a significant boost for trade and transport within the region, linking it more effectively to broader markets and fostering regional growth.
