After more than 11 months, Sabesp completed work on the megacraters on Marginal do Tietê; repair of asphalt will be handled by the city, says company
Sabesp has completed the repairs on a major crater on the Marginal do Tietê in São Paulo that resulted from a sewage leak, with asphalt repair to be managed by the city.
After more than a year of extensive repairs, Sabesp has finished addressing the issues caused by a major crater on the Marginal do Tietê in São Paulo, which opened in April 2025 due to a sewage leak. Located near the Atílio Fontana Bridge, the repair of the interceptor is now complete, allowing the construction site equipment to be taken down. Sabesp is now in discussions with the City of São Paulo to finalize the asphalt repairs on the affected roadway.
The completion of the repairs aligns with the commitment made by Sabesp's engineering director, Roberval Tavares, who had previously promised that the project would wrap up by the end of March. The repair work involved significant underground operations, extending 15 meters deep to resolve the leakage issue. This years-long problem not only created a substantial safety hazard but also caused major disruptions in one of São Paulo’s key thoroughfares, highlighting the city's infrastructure challenges.
As the city prepares to manage the final stages of road repair, there are calls for ongoing assessment and proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The timely completion of this project is critical for resuming normal traffic patterns in the area and repairing local business disruptions from the construction and the original sewage leak incident. The collaboration between Sabesp and the city government will be vital for restoring the area to its original state and ensuring urban infrastructure resilience.
