After crater expands, city hall builds asphalt barrier to prevent water advance

In São José dos Campos, city officials have erected an asphalt barrier around an expanding crater to prevent rainwater from infiltrating further into the area.

In São José dos Campos, Brazil, heavy rains have exacerbated the situation of a new crater that opened in the Jardim Imperial neighborhood over the weekend. To combat the advance of rainwater into the crater, the local city hall has constructed an asphalt barrier around it. This effort aims to divert water away from the crater and prevent potential flooding of adjacent areas.

As reported by journalist Pedro Melo from Rede Vanguarda, Urbam officials placed asphalt blankets around the crater, creating raised areas on both sides of the road. This measure is part of a broader effort to contain the flow of rainwater and prevent rapid runoff towards the crater. The site remains isolated, and constant monitoring is being conducted by the Civil Defense and city agents to ensure the safety of the surrounding community.

Currently, four homes and an apartment building with 34 units have been evacuated, displacing 156 residents due to safety concerns. The Civil Defense agency has advised residents to remove their furniture and appliances from the affected building as precautionary measures are implemented, but no timeline has been provided for when the situation may stabilize or when residents can return home.
